OpenAI Limits Weapons Answers for Teens in New ChatGPT Safety Push

ChatGPT can now end conversations that show fixation on violence and suspend repeat offenders, with parents notified when a teen account is suspended.

OpenAI announced new protections for teen users of ChatGPT in a community safety report published on October 30, according to aitimes.com. The measures will roll out over the coming weeks.

Under the new rules, ChatGPT will restrict practical information about weapons and security systems for teen users, even when a question shows no violent intent. The company said it will also limit information about past large-scale attacks for all users, including details about the weapons used and how they were obtained.

When ChatGPT detects signs of obsession with violence, it can automatically end the conversation, and repeated incidents can lead to a temporary account suspension. If a teen account is suspended over repeated violence-related conversations, parents will be notified.

OpenAI also said an age estimation system automatically switches users judged to be under 18 into a teen ChatGPT environment, even if they set their age as an adult. The company said it reported more than 200 threat cases to law enforcement during the third quarter of 2026 and will publish safety reports twice a year going forward.

Earlier in October 2026, OpenAI's first teen usage report said teens use ChatGPT an average of under 15 minutes per day. In the same month, Common Sense Media published a report saying teen ChatGPT safeguards have limits, citing cases of late or missing parent notifications for conversations on teen accounts related to suicide, self-harm or eating disorders.
