Pimax Unveils Spation, a SteamOS-Ready Mini PC for High-End VR

Pimax has announced the Spation, a mini PC it says can be configured with an RX 9070 XT or RTX 5070 Ti and a Ryzen 7 9800X3D. No price or launch date yet.

Pimax has announced a new mini PC called the Spation, a SteamOS-ready system the company positions as more powerful than a gaming laptop for high-end PC VR.

According to pcgamer.com, the Spation can be configured with either an AMD RX 9070 XT or an Nvidia RTX 5070 Ti GPU. Pimax says the system uses a Ryzen 7 9800X3D CPU and is specified with 32 GB of DDR5 memory and a 1 TB SSD.

The mini PC includes a 1000 W SFX power supply and supports Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4. Connectivity covers 2x DisplayPort 2.1, 1x HDMI 2.1, 1x USB4 and 6x USB 3.2 Gen 2 ports.

Pimax also plans to offer a barebones kit of the Spation that requires users to install their own GPU, storage and memory. The company has not yet announced a price or launch date, and says it is bringing Pimax Play to Linux as a dedicated client.

SteamOS and VR

Valve's Steam Machine is a black box-style living room PC pitched with SteamOS. Support for Nvidia GPUs on SteamOS has been described as an ongoing process, while AMD hardware is compatible. The Steam Frame has shown what Linux can do in VR.
