Poland Accuses Google of Abusing Market Power Over News

UOKiK says Google failed to give Polish publishers needed data in compensation talks, and warns of a fine of up to 10 percent of annual revenue.

Poland's Office of Competition and Consumer Protection (UOKiK) has accused Google of abusing its dominant market position in how it displays articles from local media publishers in Google Search, Google News and Google Discover.

UOKiK said Google did not provide Polish news publishers with the necessary data during compensation negotiations, according to Engadget.

UOKiK president Tomasz Chróstny said the agency could impose a fine of up to 10 percent of Google's annual revenue. Engadget said it reached out to Google for comment.

Earlier scrutiny in Europe

The European Commission previously opened an antitrust investigation into whether Google offered appropriate compensation for articles used in its AI Overview or AI Mode features. Before Google, UOKiK accused Apple of creating unfair competition in the personalized ads market through its App Tracking Transparency feature.
