REDMAGIC 12 Pro+ debuts with 185Hz display and 8400mAh battery

The gaming phone adds an under-display camera at 185Hz, a 700Hz shoulder-trigger sampling rate and a Golden Saga 24GB+1TB variant.

REDMAGIC announced the REDMAGIC 12 Pro+ gaming smartphone in China, with a global rollout planned. According to ascii.jp, the device runs on Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 chipset.

Chinese prices are 6999 yuan for the 12GB+256GB model, 7999 yuan for 16GB+512GB and 8999 yuan for 16GB+1TB. A special 24GB+1TB model called REDMAGIC 12 Pro+ Golden Saga is also planned; it uses a black-and-gold design with forged carbon in the cooling system, and no physical unit was shown at the event.

The 6.85-inch 2688x1216 display has a 185Hz refresh rate, up from 144Hz on the REDMAGIC 11 Pro+, and a 16-megapixel under-display camera with no notch or punch-hole. The company says it is the world's first display to combine a 185Hz refresh rate with an under-display camera. Refresh rate can be fixed at 60Hz, 144Hz or 185Hz, or set to auto; 35 games support 185Hz at launch, and the in-house RedCore R5 gaming chip enables frame interpolation up to 185Hz for unsupported titles.

The visible circular water-cooling system now also covers the chipset area on the right side of the top camera. The ICE cooling system combines water cooling with an air fan spinning up to 25,500 rpm, plus improved liquid metal and a vapor chamber. The dual-loop water cooling covers both battery and chipset, and pump pressure rises from 100kPa to 130kPa. An internal air-cooling fan with intake and exhaust slits on the sides is retained, and LED lighting around the water-cooling circle can be customized with separate colors for the upper and lower halves.

Shoulder triggers have a 700Hz sampling rate, and there is a dedicated Game Space button with no buttons on the left side. Battery capacity rises from 7500mAh to 8400mAh, with 120W wired and 80W wireless charging. Dimensions are 163.03 x 75.96 x 8.55mm and weight is 223g, 0.35mm thinner and 7g lighter than the previous model, but the 3.5mm headphone jack is removed.

Colors are blue, black and silver, each partly transparent to show the cooling system. The phone runs REDMAGIC OS 12 based on Android 17, with a redesigned UI, a new AI Magic Island notification area and AirDrop-compatible file transfer with iOS devices. The water-cooling system first appeared in the REDMAGIC 11 Pro+, which had a 7500mAh battery and a 144Hz display, in the previous generation.
