Reflection AI Reportedly Prepares Open-Weight Model Launch

Axios reports Reflection AI is readying an open-weight model with capabilities on par with the most advanced Chinese open-weight models, with other Western releases expected this month.

Reflection AI is preparing to launch its own open-weight AI model, according to a new Axios report. The report said the model could be expected soon and will have capabilities on par with the most advanced Chinese open-weight models.

Reflection's debut model will be joined by other open-weight models from other Western players this month, per the Axios report. The company has not publicly confirmed a release date or detailed the model's specifications.

Reflection AI was launched in 2024 by two former Google DeepMind researchers. In July, cofounder and CEO Misha Laskin told CNBC that the best open models are coming out of China and that the company wants to build a counterbalance in America.

As of March of this year, Nvidia had invested about $800 million in Reflection, according to the Wall Street Journal. In June, Reflection AI signed a multiyear partnership with SpaceX to pay $150 million per month for compute from the Colossus data center in Tennessee.

The reported launch comes as major AI labs lean on enterprise revenue. In an August closed-door meeting, OpenAI CFO Sarah Friar reportedly told investors that the majority of OpenAI's revenue is now enterprise, according to CNBC. In February, Anthropic said it had more than 500 business customers who spent over $1 million annually on API usage or Claude subscriptions, and a leaked IPO prospectus revealed last month that one-quarter of Anthropic's revenue last year came from just two customers.
