RPCS3 Devs Warn of Fake Blu-ray Drives Flooding Market
RPCS3 developers warn of counterfeit Blu-ray drives with inferior mechanisms and spoofed firmware, and advise buying only where buyer protection exists.
The developers of the PlayStation 3 emulator RPCS3 have warned their social media followers about a recent influx of fake Blu-ray drives. According to the team, scammers are putting inferior optical disc mechanisms inside enclosures and packaging meant for higher-end models to pocket the difference.
The counterfeit drives use older mechanisms that cannot read PS3 discs, the developers said. The fakes also ship with spoofed firmware, making them appear to be the higher-end drives they imitate.
To help buyers spot the problem, the RPCS3 team linked to a wiki with images and details. Telltale signs include misspelled words on the drive label, misaligned logos, incorrect manufacturing dates, and the covering of certain PCB markings.
The RPCS3 experts advise ordering only from stores with good buyer protection. The linked wiki warns specifically against buying a Blu-ray drive from Newegg or AliExpress marketplaces.
The warning arrives as hardware options for living room Blu-ray players and PC drives are narrowing. In 2026, after 20 years of commercial availability, several big brands have withdrawn from these markets. In 2026, the price of HDDs and SSDs has also pushed more computer enthusiasts toward Blu-ray storage.
