Sony Drops Android 17 Update for Xperia 10 VI Over Storage Limit

Sony says the Xperia 10 VI will not get Android 17 because its storage configuration cannot support an adequate upgrade experience.

Sony will not release an Android 17 update for the Xperia 10 VI, the company has confirmed, dropping an upgrade it had previously promised for the phone.

According to 9to5google.com, Sony said the Xperia 10 VI cannot support an Android 17 upgrade experience it considers adequate because of a limitation tied to the device's storage configuration. The company said the problem is specific to the Xperia 10 VI's technical specifications and will not affect other Xperia models due to receive Android 17.

Sony added that its commitment to four years of security updates from the product's launch date is unchanged.

The manufacturer apologized for the change falling short of its original announcement.

Background

Sony announced the Xperia 10 VI in 2024 as an upper-mid-range device with a Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 chipset, 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, running Android 14 at launch. The company initially promised three Android OS upgrades for the phone; Android 17 was the last of them, even though it was not included in the initial roadmap Sony posted in September.
