Tesla targets Q2 2027 for owner cars in robotaxi fleet
Tesla's autonomous driving chief says Model Y owners will be able to add their vehicles to the robotaxi network, using the same software as the Cybercab.
Tesla plans to let owners add their own vehicles to its robotaxi fleet in the second quarter of 2027, the company's vice president for autonomous driving, Ashok Elluswamy, said on October 21, 2026, according to The Verge.
Elluswamy said the software running the Cybercab and the Model Y is the same, and will reach customers as part of the V15 release. Owner vehicles will need to sit inside Tesla's geofences and be managed through its fleet system before they can operate fully autonomously.
Tesla also launched a new Robotaxi safety website, which states that the service has driven 3.3 million miles autonomously.
The company said more than 75 percent of new buyers in North America chose Full Self-Driving (Supervised) this quarter, a rise of almost 20 percentage points from the previous quarter.
Long-promised plan
In 2019, Tesla CEO Elon Musk said at the company's first AI Day that customer-owned vehicles could join a "Tesla Network" of robotaxis and earn their owners passive income. That same year he said a million Tesla robotaxis would be on the road by 2020.
Tesla currently runs a few hundred Robotaxis in Texas and Florida, some with human safety monitors, alongside several dozen fully driverless Cybercabs in Austin. In July, the company reported 380,000 unsupervised miles driven.
