Tesla brings Powershare home backup to Model 3 and Model Y

The feature requires a Powerwall 3, and Tesla is only guaranteeing it on Model 3 and Model Y vehicles ordered from October 1st onward.

Tesla has expanded its Powershare Home Backup feature to the Model 3 and Model Y, allowing the electric cars to serve as backup power for a home during an outage. The company says the feature requires owners to have a Tesla Powerwall 3 installed, according to The Verge.

Tesla says the Premium and Performance versions of the Model 3 and Model Y can keep a home running for more than two days. The feature is currently listed as available only in the US and Puerto Rico, and it is not offered in Canada or on the Model S and Model X.

Tesla is only guaranteeing Home Backup on Model 3 and Model Y vehicles ordered from October 1st onward, meaning earlier buyers may not receive the same support commitment.

What came before

Powershare Home Backup was previously limited to the Cybertruck, which Tesla says can provide over three days of home backup power. Tesla lists Powerwall 2 and Powerwall Plus support as "coming soon," and its Powershare Grid Support feature remains exclusive to the Cybertruck. Other automakers have offered similar capability: Kia and GM sell vehicle-to-home power on their vehicles, and Nissan's Leaf offered power-to-grid charging years ago.
