Tin House Reissues Paulina Borsook's 'Cyberselfish'

The 2000 critique of techno-libertarian culture returns to print with a new introduction by 'Nerd Reich' author Gil Durán.

Tin House is publishing a new edition of Paulina Borsook's 2000 book "Cyberselfish," the publisher confirmed. The edition includes a new introduction by Gil Durán, author of "Nerd Reich." The book had long been out of print.

Borsook began moving in Bay Area tech circles in the early-to-mid 1980s and started hearing techno-libertarian remarks around the early 1990s, material that shaped the book. She grew up in Pasadena, home of the Caltech-JPL space program, and her agent approached her after her MFA at Columbia about writing a nonfiction book.

Last year, Durán declared it was time to revive Borsook's career, saying she saw it clearly and tried to warn people 25 years earlier. Later that fall, The New York Times reported that "Cyberselfish" was finding new fans who wanted to understand why the tech industry lost its way.

Borsook began noticing rising prices for used copies of the book, unexpected social media posts about its importance and inquiries from European academics, leading to more press coverage and the new Tin House edition.

Borsook has yet to publish a second book. She said that after "Cyberselfish" was first released, no one was interested in anything she might say about tech or otherwise.
