US Developer Job Postings Rise 15% Since Claude Code Launch

Indeed's Hiring Lab data, cited by CNBC, shows developer postings up 15% since February 2025 while total US postings fell 7%.

U.S. software developer job postings have risen about 15% since February 2025, when Anthropic released its Claude Code AI coding tool, according to research from Indeed's Hiring Lab cited in a CNBC report. Over the same period, total U.S. job postings fell 7%.

Activity on GitHub points in the same direction. As of this month, AI agents were involved in one of every three pull requests proposing code changes, compared with fewer than one in ten a year earlier.

The Hiring Lab data also shows a shift in the kind of developer roles being advertised. Between May last year and May this year, 71% of the increase in developer job postings was for experienced workers, and 37% of the increase involved postings with AI in the job title.

Still below pre-pandemic levels

Developer job postings remain 27.5% lower than in February 2020, before the COVID-19 pandemic. It has not been confirmed whether AI adoption and the rise in hiring are directly causally linked.

Other datasets paint a mixed picture. According to Stanford University's 2026 AI Index, employment of software developers aged 22 to 25 has fallen about 20% since 2024. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics expects software developer employment to grow 10%, from about 1.72 million in 2025 to about 1.89 million in 2035.
