Utah launches AI-only acne diagnosis and prescribing pilot

Patients with mild-to-moderate acne in Utah can get an AI-generated diagnosis and prescription through the Nolla Derm app for $4.99 a month.

Utah began a one-year pilot program on Monday that allows an AI-only examination and prescription process for patients with mild-to-moderate acne, according to gizmodo.com. Severe or complex cases are referred to a human doctor.

The pilot uses an app called Nolla Derm from Nolla Health. Patients submit images of their face along with personal details and medical history, and the app analyzes acne and excess skin oil to produce an acne severity score.

Prescribing follows a staged path. Doctors remain in the loop for the first 100 prescriptions. For the next 500, the AI prescribes with retroactive doctor review. After that, prescriptions are fully automated, with sample review afterward.

The app costs $4.99 per month.

Earlier Utah program

In January, Utah rolled out a pilot program that let patients opt into an AI system able to renew certain prescriptions once a doctor had validated the initial action. That program drew backlash from doctors who argued it was unsafe.
