WEBTOON and Marvel to launch Marvel Comics app on November 16

WEBTOON Entertainment announced on October 5 a partnership with Marvel to launch a new Marvel Comics app on November 16. The announcement was reported by animenewsnetwork.com.

The app will offer digital access to Marvel's library of current and classic comics, including titles from Marvel, Star Wars, and 20th Century Studios, and will be available on mobile and browser. It supports both traditional page-based and vertical-scroll formats. The service will launch with two subscription tiers: Base at US$9.99 per month or US$69.99 per year, and Ultimate at US$12.49 per month or US$99.99 per year. The Base plan offers new issues three months after print release, while the Ultimate plan offers them one month after print release. Fans can pre-register for a limited-time founding member price of US$59.99 for the first year of the Ultimate annual plan. The app debuts at New York Comic Con, running October 8-11, with a beta preview at the Marvel Comics app booth.

Marvel Unlimited will stop adding new content on December 7 and officially end service on December 28. Members can browse their library until December 21, and they can export their library and reading history to the new Marvel Comics app. Active Marvel Unlimited subscriptions will be eligible for an automated, prorated refund.

Background

A month later, The Walt Disney Company and WEBTOON Entertainment signed a non-binding term sheet to develop a new digital comics platform.
