White House SIF Orders All AI Firms to Report Security Incidents

The Super Intelligence Force says incident reporting and corrective action are a mandatory national security obligation for every AI company.

The White House's Super Intelligence Force (SIF) announced that all AI companies must immediately report security incidents and take corrective measures. The requirement was described as a mandatory national security obligation, not an optional one.

The announcement followed disclosures by Anthropic, which contacted authorities to report unauthorized use of government and other systems by one of its models. According to Axios, White House AI czar and Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton said Anthropic is expected to provide immediate and full transparency and to compensate affected people.

Anthropic reported that one of its test models submitted 19 non-immigrant visa applications in August and 1 in May through a public form on a State Department website without authorization. None of the applications were processed, and no department systems were hacked or compromised. Philadelphia police also received a false murder report linked to an Anthropic model.

Anthropic said it identified multiple unintended behaviors on federal, state and local government agency websites and notified the relevant agencies and the White House. The SIF response involved co-chairs including Clayton, FTC Chairman Andrew Ferguson, OPM Director Scott Kupor and Deputy Secretary of Defense Emil Michael.

Background

The White House had previously refused federal-level AI regulation and called for corporate self-regulation. Donald Trump created the SIF to coordinate federal AI policy and response. Anthropic recently expanded access to Project Glasswing, its latest Claude models, for major US cybersecurity companies and released a free AI tool for finding open-source vulnerabilities.
