Microsoft Reveals Windows 11 Update Coming This Autumn

Microsoft detailed Windows 11 improvements arriving this autumn, including a rebuilt Windows Search and an app that turns hand drawings into text.

Microsoft announced on October 15, 2026 a set of Windows 11 improvements that will roll out this autumn, according to the company's official Windows Experience Blog. The changes cover responsiveness, memory management, a rebuilt Windows Search, smartphone integration, the Photos app, gaming, a new pen app, haptics and accessibility.

Microsoft says OS-wide responsiveness gains of up to 20 percent are achievable in the Start screen, File Explorer, Windows Search, Snipping Tool, Microsoft 365 apps and Microsoft Edge. Memory management was improved, particularly on devices with only 8GB of RAM, allowing up to 2GB more active data to stay in memory, while lazy-loading widgets save more than 200MB for apps and other tasks.

Search rebuilt, phone links deepened

The new Windows Search is rebuilt with WinUI 3, drops the preview pane, and shows results and actions such as toggling dark mode, night mode changes, window arrangement and smartphone operations in a single list. It is available to Insiders and planned for general users within the year. Smartphone integration with iPhone and Android is enhanced, including phone notifications on the Start screen, message and call replies, Android apps in resizable windows, phone photos on PC, browsing phone files from File Explorer and Cross Device Resume for supported apps.

The Photos app gets up to 20 percent faster launch, a modernized viewer, natural language search, album creation, a refreshed editing screen, background object removal and Relight lighting correction. Advanced Shader Delivery, first introduced on the ROG Xbox Ally handheld, now works on AMD RDNA GPUs and Qualcomm Snapdragon X2 series, with Intel and NVIDIA support planned.

Microsoft Ink Canvas, a new pen-oriented canvas app, lets users jot ideas by hand, annotate, and use Copilot to convert drawings into diagrams or text. It is preinstalled on the second-generation 12-inch Surface Pro and downloadable from the Microsoft Store on other supported Windows devices; Copilot-linked AI features require a Microsoft 365 Personal, Family, Premium or Pro subscription. Haptics support is also coming to Windows 11, with the second-generation Surface Mouse and Logitech MX Master 4 among supported devices. Accessibility additions include Screen Tint, per-monitor magnification retention and braille display setup support.
