Microsoft tests redesigned File Explorer menu in Windows 11 beta
The Beta channel build also brings a Mobile devices section and an internet speed test to Quick Settings, plus a Magnifier shortcut toggle.
Microsoft has started testing a redesigned context menu for File Explorer in Windows 11, rolling it out to Windows Insiders in the Beta channel. According to windowscentral.com, the new right-click menu cuts down on top-level clutter while keeping commonly used actions within easy reach.
The redesign includes a new Settings experience that lets users choose what appears in the context menu, and Microsoft added a teaching tip for first-time users that explains the customization options.
Quick Settings gains phone controls and a speed test
Quick Settings is also getting a Mobile devices experience. For users with a connected Android phone, it can ring the device, toggle Do Not Disturb, change the ringer mode and play a sound to help locate the phone. iPhone support begins with a more limited, status-focused set of controls.
Insiders can additionally run an internet speed test inside Quick Settings, with download speed, upload speed and ping results shown there. Microsoft had previously introduced an internet speed test for Windows Insiders, and the new Quick Settings integration builds on it.
Other changes in the release include a Magnifier keyboard shortcut toggle under Settings > Accessibility > Magnifier, which controls whether the Windows logo key + Plus launches Magnifier; the shortcut stays on by default and can be switched off or back on at any time. Microsoft 365 subscribers with recurring billing turned off can now re-enable it from Windows Settings, the Accounts page or the Start menu without opening a separate webpage. File Explorer also shows improved progress indication when navigating to slower-loading locations such as network drives, and the Settings home page received performance improvements aimed at reducing loading times in some scenarios.
Microsoft shipped four other Windows 11 Insider builds the same day, and the Windows Insider Program now lets users filter feature flags by enablement state.
