Korea, US, Japan groups hold first mobile XR workshop at ISMAR 2026

Researchers from GIST, KAIST, DGIST, MIT CSAIL and the Toyota Research Institute organised XRWay'26 in Bari, Italy, on the 5th.

Five universities and research institutes from Korea, the US and Japan held the first International Workshop on Mobile Extended Reality (XRWay'26) on the 5th, at IEEE ISMAR 2026 in Bari, Italy, according to zdnet.co.kr.

The workshop was organised by researchers from GIST, KAIST, DGIST, MIT CSAIL and the Toyota Research Institute. Its sessions addressed how users can safely and conveniently use XR technology while moving.

Stephen Brewster of the University of Glasgow delivered a keynote on the potential of XR headsets for moving passengers.

Six papers on driving and walking

Six papers were presented across two sessions: XR for driving and transportation, and XR for walking and mobility.

The GIST PAIR-HCI Center said it plans to expand international joint research and researcher exchanges on XR technology in mobile environments.

XR headsets, smart glasses and automotive AR navigation have recently become commercialised, but most remain limited to indoor environments.
