YouTube Tests Desktop Sidebar Layout as Users Push Back
Comments and video details move to a right-hand sidebar while oversized recommendation thumbnails sit under the player, Android Authority reports.
YouTube is rolling out a desktop interface test that moves comments and video details into a right-hand sidebar, with a grid of oversized recommendation thumbnails placed directly below the video player. Users on Reddit have reported seeing the layout on their desktops, according to Android Authority, which has reached out to Google for comment.
The company has not officially announced whether the sidebar layout will become permanent or remains a server-side A/B test, so the version viewers encounter may vary by account.
Some viewers are working around the change with custom uBlock Origin filters and browser extensions that restore the previous YouTube layout.
An earlier attempt was rolled back
In 2024, YouTube tested a similar desktop sidebar redesign to widespread criticism. The company briefly let Premium subscribers try it before rolling it back.
YouTube has said its UI changes are intended to reduce clutter, boost engagement and create cross-device consistency.
