YouTube moves Subscriptions to top bar, adds custom feeds
The redesign also brings dedicated Live, Music and Movies & TV feeds to the Home tab, and removes the navigation drawer on mobile.
YouTube is rolling out a redesign on Android and iOS that moves the Subscriptions tab out of the bottom navigation bar and into the top bar of the Home tab, where it sits second, directly after Home. The change was reported by 9to5google.com.
The new top bar also adds dedicated feeds for Live, Music and Movies & TV, with the last available only to users with active subscriptions such as Primetime Channels. The redesign removes the YouTube navigation drawer.
Alongside the navigation change, YouTube is introducing custom feeds. Users tap "+" at the top of the Home feed and describe in their own words the topics, channels or mood they want to see. The resulting feeds appear as top tabs after Home and Subs, and sync to the web.
Free users can save up to 3 custom feeds, while YouTube Premium members can save up to 8. The custom feeds first roll out on mobile and desktop in English to signed-in viewers in the U.S.
Long-running test
Testing of the top-bar redesign started earlier this year, according to 9to5google.com. Subscriptions had appeared in the YouTube bottom bar since 2017, for nearly a decade.
