Skyblivion team: former volunteer threatens €30,000 lawsuit
The Skyblivion team says it removed a former volunteer's work entirely and has legal counsel on standby at a claimed cost of €2,500.
The Skyblivion team has revealed that a former volunteer is threatening to sue for damages upwards of €30,000, according to Rock Paper Shotgun. The dispute centers on the volunteer's objection to the decompilation of parts of their work after access to the original source code repository was revoked, the team says.
The team says it has removed the former volunteer's work entirely and replaced it with new or integrated work. It adds that the legal threats reportedly demand personal information, including full names and addresses, of multiple Skyblivion volunteers.
Skyblivion lead Kyle 'Rebelzize' Rebel asked the community not to turn the situation into a witch hunt. The team says it has consulted legal counsel and has a lawyer on standby at a claimed cost of €2,500.
It is also asking for pro bono help from people with IP or GDPR law backgrounds via the mod's website.
Skyblivion, a volunteer-made remake of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion in Skyrim's engine, was originally set to release last year. In October 2025, former volunteer Dee Keyes publicly disagreed with the project's leads over whether releasing the mod that year was achievable, and Skyblivion was subsequently delayed into 2026.
