Akira Toriyama Archive Shares Original Draft of 1990 Dragon Ball McLaren Art
The draft, published by the Akira Toriyama Archive, shows Goku, Bulma, Krillin and Gohan in McLaren uniforms opening a champagne bottle.
The Akira Toriyama Archive has released the original draft of Akira Toriyama's 1990 Dragon Ball artwork featuring the McLaren Formula One team, according to cbr.com. The illustration depicts Goku, Bulma, Krillin and Gohan in orange McLaren uniforms opening a champagne bottle.
The finished artwork was used for the cover of Weekly Shonen Jump 1990 Double Issue No. 21/No. 22, which was published in Japan on April 24, 1990. According to the Archive, the draft shows the full image without the other illustrations that covered parts of it on the actual cover.
The release follows the Archive's 2024 spotlight on the official 1990 cover artwork. In 1990, Weekly Shonen Jump sponsored the McLaren Formula One team, and the magazine also included a full-color pullout poster of Goku, Gohan and Bulma with an F1 car in its Issue No. 26.
Other Dragon Ball-related posts from the Archive have highlighted earlier vehicle designs, such as the cover of Dragon Ball Vol. 15 in December 1988, which showed Krillin and Goku in a vehicle inspired by a Bugatti sports car.
