Foliascope's Back to Tomioka, Co-Produced by Crunchyroll, Set for 2028
The 2D animated feature, adapted from a graphic novel and directed by François-Marc Baillet, was selected for this year's TIFFCOM.
Back to Tomioka, a 2D animated feature produced by Foliascope and co-produced by Crunchyroll, has been selected for this year's TIFFCOM and is slated for a 2028 release, according to cartoonbrew.com. François-Marc Baillet directs the film.
The feature adapts a graphic novel by Michaël Crouzat, Laurent Galandon and Aude Soleilhac. It follows two siblings crossing a nuclear exclusion zone while carrying their grandmother's ashes.
The project has a longer history on the festival and market circuit. A project trailer was presented at Cartoon Movie 2023, and Crouzat, originally attached to direct, made a teaser in 2022 before leaving the project.
The story draws on the aftermath of the 2011 disaster. That year, farmer Naoto Matsumura disobeyed evacuation orders and stayed in the radioactive exclusion zone to care for abandoned animals; he is the inspiration for a character in the film.
For Baillet, the subject is also personal. In 2020, during the COVID lockdown, the director was unable to attend his grandmother's funeral.
