Chiikawa Film Slips to #2 in 10th Weekend, Precure Holds #3

Eiga Chiikawa: Ningyo no Shima no Himitsu fell from #1 to #2 in its 10th weekend at the Japanese box office, according to figures reported by Anime News Network. The film sold 182,000 tickets and earned 280,160,700 yen (about US$1.78 million) from Friday to Sunday.

Eiga Meitantei Precure! Fushigi na Niwa to Futari no Himitsu remained at #3 in its second weekend, selling 134,000 tickets and earning 174,435,520 yen (about US$1.11 million) over the same period.

Cosmic Princess Kaguya! dropped from #6 to #10 in its second week after returning to theaters on September 18 with new premium formats.

Background

Eiga Chiikawa: Ningyo no Shima no Himitsu originally opened on July 24 and ranked #1 for its opening weekend. It earned 990 million yen (about US$6.05 million) on its opening day and sold 1,508,500 tickets for 2,240,333,500 yen (about US$13.70 million) in its first three days. As of September 23, the film had sold 11.33 million tickets and earned 16.5 billion yen (about US$104.3 million). Its 4DX screenings began on September 5, with one-day-only cheering screenings on September 11 and penlight screenings on September 23.

Eiga Meitantei Precure! Fushigi na Niwa to Futari no Himitsu opened in Japan on September 18. It sold 358,000 tickets for 446 million yen (about US$2.82 million) in its first three days, and in its first six days until September 23, it sold 606,000 tickets and earned 746 million yen (about US$4.71 million).

Cosmic Princess Kaguya! first had a limited theatrical run starting on February 20. That one-week run was extended and finally ended on June 18. Netflix began streaming the film on January 22.
