Naver Webtoon launches vertical-scroll Junji Ito collection with Tomie
The collection debuts on Naver Webtoon's Maeil+ and Naver Series, marking the first time Ito's manga has been reformatted as a vertical-scroll webtoon.
Naver Webtoon released a vertical-scroll webtoon adaptation of Junji Ito's horror manga collection, titled 'Ito Junji Masterpiece Collection', on October 30 at 10 p.m., the platform said. The series is available exclusively on Naver Webtoon's 'Maeil+' and Naver Series, according to venturesquare.net.
The first work serialized in the collection is 'Tomie', Ito's debut manga. Further titles, including 'Soichi's Curse Diary', will follow sequentially. New chapters are published twice a week, on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
The adaptation keeps Ito's original black-and-white artwork while re-editing panel layout and scene direction for webtoon scrolling. Naver Webtoon said this is the first time Ito's manga has been produced as a vertical-scroll webtoon, a project planned ahead of his 40th debut anniversary.
An interview video with Ito will be released on October 31 via Naver Webtoon's official Instagram and the YouTube channel of publisher Sigongsa. Naver Series is also holding a discount event on Ito's print books to mark the release.
Earlier Japanese manga reformatted for scrolling
Naver Webtoon has previously released Japanese manga such as 'Parasyte', 'Hell's Paradise', 'Fullmetal Alchemist' and 'Skip and Loafer' as color-scroll webtoons, and this year released 'Bocchi the Rock!' exclusively. Parent company Webtoon Entertainment is also pursuing vertical-scroll reformatting projects with North American publishers including Dark Horse and IDW, and announced plans with BOOM! Studios at New York Comic Con 2026 earlier this month to release 'Mighty Morphin Power Rangers (2016)' as a vertical-scroll webtoon.
