New Naruto Anime Set Before Volume 20, Cast Says at NYCC

Junko Takeuchi, Noriaki Sugiyama and producer Yoshihiko Tominaga discussed the project and its trailer at New York Comic Con.

A new Naruto anime revisits one of Team 7's earliest missions, and its setting places Naruto as a young boy with Team 7, before the events of Naruto Volume 20. Voice actors Junko Takeuchi, who plays Naruto, and Noriaki Sugiyama, who plays Sasuke, discussed the project at New York Comic Con alongside Studio Pierrot producer Yoshihiko Tominaga, according to Crunchyroll.

A trailer for the new anime was shown during the event. Tominaga said the visual quality is very modern, almost cinematic, with character designs and fluid animation intended to honor the original style.

Takeuchi has voiced Naruto for more than 20 years, while the character first made his way to television nearly 25 years ago.

An early mission, a modern look

The new anime looks back to the period when Naruto was still a young boy working with Team 7, rather than moving the story forward. Tominaga's comments at the panel focused on how the production balances that earlier era with updated animation.
