BioWare's Shelved Mass Effect Game Details Emerge

YouTuber Dantics said he advised BioWare on Mass Effect Universe, set 600 years after the Reaper War and now shelved.

New details have emerged about Mass Effect Universe, the in-development Mass Effect game from BioWare, following the news that EA will shut the studio down. The account comes from YouTuber Dantics, a content creator who said he sat on a private "Mass Effect Council" of creators advising the game's small development team, as reported by gamespot.com.

According to Dantics, Mass Effect Universe was set more than 600 years after the Reaper War. Players would control a customizable N7 agent with a smaller weapon arsenal, a character he described as a cross between John Wick and James Bond. The story centred on stopping a sinister force operating in the shadows of a galactic cold war, and a trailer pointed to a shift toward covert ops, espionage and barroom shootouts.

In that future, the relays destroyed at the end of the Reaper War had been rebuilt and technology advanced rapidly. Three new powers had arisen: the Council races, humanity allied with Krogans and Batarians, and the Geth, who built superstructure relays connecting the Milky Way and Andromeda galaxies.

Dantics said the N7 agent would carry experimental implants allowing environment hacking similar to Cyberpunk 2077, with handcrafted missions offering "Hitman-style freedom". Squadmates could clash with each other, romance was "not being sanitized", and Liara T'Soni was said to be alive as a powerful Asari Matriarch.

Mass Effect Universe has since been shelved, though a Mass Effect TV show is reported to still be in development. Mark Darrah, a former BioWare executive producer, suggested EA could sell the Mass Effect IP in the future. Separately, Archetype Entertainment released a new trailer for Exodus, a spiritual successor to Mass Effect.
