BioWare co-founder Greg Zeschuk says EA buyout sealed studio's fate

Greg Zeschuk told Eurogamer that EA's sale to a Saudi-led consortium was the final nail in the coffin for BioWare, which closed last week.

Greg Zeschuk, co-founder of BioWare, has said that EA's sale to a Saudi-led consortium was the final nail in the coffin for the studio, which closed last week. He made the comments in an interview with Eurogamer.

Zeschuk said the closure is saddest for Edmonton, the city where BioWare was founded. He added that he went through all the emotions long ago.

According to Zeschuk, BioWare's gradual change came from people leaving and joining the studio, not from his and Ray Muzyka's departure. He also said that BioWare's long, complicated games are harder to sustain than annual sports games.

Zeschuk founded BioWare in 1995 with Ray Muzyka and Augustine Yip. The studio was sold to EA in 2008, and Zeschuk and Muzyka retired in 2012, the year Mass Effect 3 was released. Augustine Yip left the company in 1998. Muzyka has so far declined to be interviewed.

Since 2017, Zeschuk has been building the beer-brewing company Blind Enthusiasm.
