Brazil Aims for Top 5 Game Producer Status in Under 10 Years

Abragames president Rodrigo Terra says Brazil wants to be among the world's top five game producers in less than a decade and is expanding outreach to Asia.

Rodrigo Terra, president of Brazilian game developers association Abragames, said Brazil intends to become one of the world's top five game producers in less than 10 years. He made the remarks in an interview with gamesindustry.biz.

As part of that push, Abragames is expanding its international outreach toward Asian countries including Japan, Korea, China and Southeast Asian nations such as Thailand, Vietnam and Malaysia. Terra said a Korean company wants to start an operation in Brazil.

Brazil's ministry of labour recently recognised more video game-related professions, including producer, game designer, game narrative and game artist. Until June, video game professionals in Brazil needed to be registered as software developers or something similar, according to Terra.

A couple of years ago, Brazil adopted a new legal framework that redefined video games in the eyes of the law, opened up new incentives for games companies, and created additional opportunities for investment.
