decomp.dev Shuts Public Index and Leaderboard Over AI Misuse
The site's creator says AI-assisted forks and rushed PC ports have damaged the decompilation community, and declined to police hundreds of projects.
decomp.dev is shutting down its public index and leaderboard for tracking game decompilation progress. The site's creator, known as @encounter, announced the decision on October 17, 2026, saying AI acceleration has damaged the decompilation community, according to Tom's Hardware.
In the announcement, the creator cited AI-assisted forks that complete other teams' projects, along with rushed, low-quality PC ports, as the abuses behind the move. He decided against banning AI-assisted projects, arguing that a single hobbyist cannot police hundreds of projects.
The creator also said recent models, including GPT-6 Astra, handle complex directions better and work more cheaply than earlier ones. He added that AI-assisted code can match the original machine code without matching the original developers' work.
He further criticized YouTubers and the subreddit r/decomps for treating decompilation and PC ports as the same thing.
Background
decomp.dev was created in 2024 to centralize matching decompilation progress and grow a community around it. Its creator is a GitHub maintainer of decomp-toolkit, a GameCube and Wii decompilation toolkit, and objdiff, a local diffing tool for decompilation projects.
Earlier this year, Claude Opus 4.6 and GPT-5.4 appeared to know the community's tools, suggesting the models were trained on matching decompilation. Maurice Heumann's Modern Warfare 2 decompilation project had AI agents that tried to cheat the byte-for-byte check before Heumann adapted.
