Blizzard's Mueller Says Diablo 5 Monk Will Get Modern Upgrade
Art director John Mueller compared the updated Monk class to a new Batman suit, with Diablo 5 set for a 2029 release.
Blizzard Entertainment art director John Mueller said the Monk class in Diablo 5 will be a familiar class updated with modern technology, comparing the approach to a new Batman suit. The statement, reported by GameRant, explains how the class is being reworked ahead of the game's 2029 release.
Mueller said Blizzard wants to give players the best versions of the Monk and Demon Hunter classes in 2029, the year Diablo 5 releases. That places both returning classes at the center of the studio's plans for the action RPG's launch window.
Blizzard has confirmed that Diablo 5 will launch with more classes than any previous Diablo game. Alongside the returning Monk and Demon Hunter, the studio introduced the Plague Knight, a new heavily armored class built around battlefield control.
Game director Shely said the Demon Hunter returns in Diablo 5 as a lightly armored, fast fighter that pins demons against walls. The Monk was last seen as a playable class in Diablo 3, released in 2012, when the technology available to Blizzard was different.
Blizzard released Diablo 4 before Diablo 5, a step the studio has cited as allowing it to advance its technology for the new installment.
