Game Boy Museum archive released as free Game Boy cartridge ROM

Creator Marcel Pflug drew the cartridge's title screen by hand, pixel by pixel, and the ROM can be written to a user's own cartridge.

Marcel Pflug has released a free ROM that puts the Game Boy Museum, a reference archive about Nintendo's handheld, onto a Game Boy cartridge, Eurogamer reports. The cartridge contains a searchable encyclopedia of Game Boy hardware, accessories, games, merchandise and advertisements, and plays no game.

The ROM is available as a free download that users can write to their own cartridge. Pflug drew the cartridge's title screen by hand, pixel by pixel.

Because the handheld cannot display photographs, the museum cartridge shows QR codes that link to images stored elsewhere. Completing the project took several years of tinkering, according to the report.

From website to cartridge

The Game Boy Museum began as a website cataloguing Game Boy products, peripherals, hardware revisions and articles. Nintendo released the Game Boy in 1989.
