God of War's Kratos Was Almost Named Dominus, Jaffe Reveals
David Jaffe said on X that team members kept making Domino's Pizza jokes about the name Dominus, leading marketing lead Susan Panico to suggest Kratos instead.
God of War creator David Jaffe revealed on X that the series protagonist Kratos was originally named Dominus. According to Jaffe, the name was changed after team members kept making Domino's Pizza jokes about Dominus.
Jaffe said marketing lead Susan Panico proposed the name Kratos, which the team adopted. He added that Kratos had been on a list of ancient Greek male names he had overlooked.
The original God of War debuted in 2005. The first four mainline games and several PSP titles were set in Greek mythology, while 2018's God of War soft-reboot moved Kratos to Norse mythology.
Earlier in 2026, Santa Monica Studio confirmed remakes of the original three games are in the works. A TV show based on the 2018 God of War is in development at Prime Video with Dave Bautista as Kratos.
God of War: Laufey, a new entry in the series, is scheduled for release on February 16, 2027.
