Rockstar's Rob Nelson explains how GTA 6 balances story and open world

Nelson told IGN the game weighs narrative against open-world freedom, and that world depth and density stand out on first exploration.

Rockstar Games developer Rob Nelson has explained how Grand Theft Auto 6 balances open-world freedom with its narrative, in an interview with IGN. Nelson said the studio wants to let the story take precedence at times while opening things up wherever possible.

According to Nelson, the game's world depth, traffic density, population density and response fidelity stand out on first exploration. He also said the title improves open-world gameplay, world size, population density and NPC interactions compared with earlier work.

In an IGN preview, protagonist Jason suggested a job near a car park, which prompted Nelson to change his planned route to a pawn shop. He said emergent, natural-feeling events now occur frequently while roaming the world.

Grand Theft Auto 6 is set in the state of Leonida and marks a return to Vice City. It is scheduled to release on November 19, 2026.

Earlier Rockstar titles, including Grand Theft Auto 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2, let players ignore the main story and explore freely, and Grand Theft Auto 6 is larger than Grand Theft Auto 5.
