Jagex reveals RuneScape 4, an MMO built in Unreal Engine

The project began as a RuneScape: Dragonwilds expansion called Shadows of Ashenfall before Jagex re-scoped it into a full MMO.

Jagex has officially revealed RuneScape 4, an MMO set in the RuneScape universe, according to Polygon. The studio did not announce a release window, platforms or gameplay details.

The game was originally planned as an expansion for RuneScape: Dragonwilds called Shadows of Ashenfall. As team members began adding social features to Dragonwilds, including persistent servers, high player counts and player-to-player trading, the project was re-scoped into a full MMO and given its own title.

RuneScape 4 is being developed in Unreal Engine. A trailer shows the game focuses on dragons that players can fight and ride.

According to Jesse America, the entire studio will work on the game, which he described as the studio's fourth pillar.
