Key creator Jun Maeda diagnosed with pharyngeal cancer

Visual Arts said Maeda has chosen palliative care to conserve strength and keep working on Heaven Burns Red scenarios and songs.

Visual Arts announced on October 19 that Jun Maeda, a creator at its brand Key, has been diagnosed with pharyngeal cancer, according to automaton-media.com. The company said Maeda has chosen palliative care over aggressive treatment so he can conserve his strength and focus on creative work.

Maeda is currently hospitalized and has said he wants to devote himself to production until the end. Visual Arts said he has finished writing his portion of the scenario for Heaven Burns Red through the conclusion of Chapter 6, including the accompanying lyrics and music.

Further scenarios and songs beyond that point may not be handled by Maeda because of the progression of his illness, the company said.

A planned new music project intended for a long-term rollout on YouTube has been revised: the songs currently conceived will be completed quickly and released sequentially on YouTube instead.

Throat symptoms began this spring

Maeda began feeling discomfort in his throat in spring 2026, and in summer 2026 he started to notice swelling and pain. A detailed examination led to the pharyngeal cancer diagnosis. Maeda is known at Key for works including Kanon, Air, CLANNAD and Little Busters!, and handled the original concept and music for Summer Pockets.
