Macronix to exit ROM memory business by end of Q3 fiscal 2026

Macronix says ROM products make up 5 percent of its business as it shifts capacity to NOR flash and eMMC memory chips.

Macronix has announced it is leaving the ROM memory business, with plans to phase out ROM products entirely by the end of the third quarter of fiscal year 2026. The company disclosed the move in its latest earnings call, as reported by Eurogamer.

According to the company’s reported third-quarter sales, ROM products account for 5 percent of Macronix’s business. Macronix said it will shift the freed manufacturing capacity to NOR flash and eMMC memory chips.

The decision marks a sharp change in the company’s product mix. A year ago, ROM products represented 26 percent of Macronix’s business, before falling to its current share.

Suppliers adjust around Nintendo’s formats

Macronix is one of the memory suppliers tied to Nintendo’s cartridge production, alongside Rohm Co. The phase-out timeline means ROM output will wind down through fiscal 2026.

The wider memory market has also been shifting. Nearly a year ago, Micron announced it was exiting the consumer memory business and shutting down its Crucial brand.

Nintendo, for its part, said last month that it has no plans to ditch physical games, after Sony decided to end disc manufacturing in 2028.
