Magic's Star Trek Set Adds Kobayashi Maru Scenario Card

Wizards of the Coast showed new cards and mechanics from the Star Trek Universes Beyond set, which launches November 13, 2026.

Wizards of the Coast has revealed new cards and mechanics from Magic: The Gathering's Star Trek Universes Beyond set ahead of its release on November 13, 2026. Among them is a mythic rare blue enchantment called Kobayashi Maru Scenario, according to Polygon.

The card offers a choice at the beginning of the player's upkeep: draw two cards, return an opponent's creature with mana value 3 or less to its owner's hand, or create two 1/1 red Officer creature tokens. After three turns, the only option left is to abandon ship and lose the game.

The name comes from the training simulation that opens Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, the 1982 film directed by Nicholas Meyer, in which the exercise ends in disaster. The simulation's reprogramming is also depicted early in J. J. Abrams' 2009 Star Trek film.

The set brings back the Spacecraft and Station mechanics introduced in Edge of Eternities. The Borg use an Assimilate mechanic that turns creatures, often taken from an opponent's graveyard, into Borg artifact creatures with a +1/+1 counter that lose their previous creature types.

The Federation mechanic represents cooperation among worlds, as on Captain Jonathan Archer, who can be tapped for one green mana to give a creature +X/+X equal to the number of creature types among non-Borg creatures the player controls. The Strange New Worlds ability scales rewards with the number of differently named lands, as on the sorcery Deep Space Scan and the card Captain Pike, Fullness of Time.

A separate Beam Me Up ability returns a creature to its owner's hand as part of the casting cost to cast an instant or sorcery from the graveyard.
