Magic: The Gathering to ship four Commander precons with every 2027 set
Head designer Mark Rosewater confirmed 24 preconstructed decks across 2027, as Wizards explains why some sets get only one deck.
Every Magic: The Gathering set released in 2027 will come with four Commander precons, head designer Mark Rosewater confirmed on Tumblr, according to Kotaku. That works out to 24 preconstructed decks across next year.
The confirmation follows an explanation from game designer Gavin Verhey about why Wizards of the Coast sometimes ships a set with only a single Commander deck. Verhey said decks sell unevenly when two are released together and one is far more exciting than the other, leaving the weaker deck on shelves while the stronger one sells out.
The current set, Reality Fracture, includes just one preconstructed Commander deck, Multiverse Reforged, built around the four-color Jace, Multiverse Architect. Verhey told IGN that many at Wizards internally believe Multiverse Reforged is among the most powerful precons the company has ever released.
A recent split in approach
In the summer before the article, the Marvel set included four different Commander precons, one per hero or villain group. In March before the article, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles set featured only one precon, Turtle Power, which covered all five colors.
