Canceled Mass Effect: Universe trailer leaks; story details shared
Bloomberg's Jason Schreier verified the leaked trailer's authenticity, while content creator Dantics described a Galactic Cold War setting 600 years after the Reaper War.
A previously unreleased trailer for a canceled Mass Effect role-playing game leaked online, revealing the project was titled Mass Effect: Universe. The trailer introduced a new protagonist, showed cinematic action and confirmed the return of Liara T'Soni.
Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier verified the trailer's authenticity, according to gamerant.com. Content creator Dantics, who says he served on a BioWare community council for Mass Effect 5, then shared what he described as details about the canceled game.
According to Dantics, Mass Effect: Universe was set more than 600 years after the Reaper War. The protagonist was a customizable N7 agent rather than Commander Shepard, and the story played out during a Galactic Cold War in which three major factions competed for power.
Dantics also said the Geth emerged as a third superpower, with enormous megastructures. The claims have not been independently confirmed beyond his account.
BioWare closure came before the leak
One day before the trailer surfaced, Electronic Arts announced BioWare's closure and the cancellation of Mass Effect 5. Mass Effect: Andromeda was released on May 14, 2021.
