Capcom unveils Mega Man: Dual Override for 2027
The new mainline entry brings playable Proto Man, chip customisation and expanded Robot Master stages to major platforms.
Capcom has announced Mega Man: Dual Override, a new mainline entry in the series, with a planned release in 2027 that ties into the franchise's 40th anniversary. The game is coming to virtually every major gaming platform currently available.
The adventure is played from a 2D perspective like the classic mainline games, and Proto Man is playable alongside Mega Man. According to Den of Geek, Proto Man fights with a shield and a melee weapon, must avoid overheating, and executes his moves through command inputs.
Robot Master stages have been expanded: each boss has a set of sub-levels with multiple checkpoints and a mini-boss before the main boss fight. Players also customise chips that grant abilities such as dash attacks and forcefields.
A preview build was playable at Tokyo Game Show 2026, where players fought a Robot Master called Twinkle Girl. The creative team includes director Shinya Ikuta and art directors Yuji Ishihara and Shinsuke Komaki.
Long wait since the last new entry
Not counting remasters and collections, the last new Mega Man game was Mega Man 11 in 2018, which introduced the Double Gear system. The series has been an industry icon since the 1980s, and Mega Man 3 added the slide mechanic.
