Ryan Laley Games launches Mimic early access on Steam

Indie developer Ryan Laley Games has launched early access for Mimic, its asymmetric multiplayer action adventure game, on PC via Steam, according to gamespark.jp. An Epic Games Store release is also planned.

Matches pit players against each other aboard the spaceship Icarus, which is set to self-destruct toward the sun after its crew is deemed beyond rescue because of hidden mimic aliens. Official matchmaking supports 5 players, while private match settings allow up to 10.

Players take one of three roles. Crew members must repair the ship and escape in escape pods, but lose if they leave with a Mimic aboard. The Agent, a corporate human who passes as a Crew member, aims to eliminate the Crew while returning with a living Mimic. The Mimic is a murderous alien that can imitate Crew and wins by wiping them out or boarding an escape pod undetected; escaping together with the Agent is also possible.

A murderous android NPC roams the ship, with targets set by voting, and a Twitch integration feature lets viewers give the android instructions. Players reason and misdirect each other through in-game proximity chat, and dead players can still influence the match as ghost-like entities. Private matches allow adjustments such as one-hit kills and Mimic invisibility.

During early access, three new maps and a single-player mode are planned, along with other new content and features. A PS5 and Xbox Series X|S release is planned for 2027.

Background

The game was announced in May 2024, when its Epic Games Store and Steam store pages went live, and playtests were held intermittently over the past several months.
