Miyamoto receives Japan's Order of Culture

The creator of Mario and designer of Donkey Kong and The Legend of Zelda was honoured in a recognition reported by inside-games.jp.

Shigeru Miyamoto, the game designer known as the creator of Mario and the designer of Donkey Kong and The Legend of Zelda, has received Japan's Order of Culture, according to inside-games.jp.

Miyamoto has worked at Nintendo, where his credits include the Super Mario Bros. series and Super Mario 64.

Four decades of Nintendo history

Nintendo released Super Mario Bros. for the Family Computer on September 13, 1985. In 1996 the company released the Nintendo 64, and on November 25, 1996, the Asahi Shimbun published an interview with Miyamoto about Super Mario 64.

The same period saw the Japanese game market shift: in 1995, the "TV game war" began as successor consoles to the Super Famicom appeared, including Sony's PlayStation.

Miyamoto's work has also drawn attention outside the games pages. In 1986, Saitama police arrested the ringleader of a group making counterfeit Super Mario Bros. software, as reported by the Asahi Shimbun on January 31, 1986, and that year a pair calling themselves "Super Mario" threatened Snow Brand Milk Products with poisoning and demanded 10 million yen.
