PS5 Teardown Reveals Unannounced EDM-051 Motherboard Revision

A teardown by modder Modyfikator89 shows a redesigned PS5 layout, an easier-to-replace CMOS battery, and a revised liquid-metal cooling setup.

A teardown has revealed an unannounced PlayStation 5 hardware revision built around a new EDM-051 motherboard, first reported by VGC. The teardown was carried out by console technician and modder Modyfikator89.

The motherboard has been redesigned with a different internal layout. Among the visible changes is a CR2032 CMOS battery that is much easier to remove and replace than in earlier units.

The teardown also identifies a newer, lower-cost HDMI retimer implementation. Sony has apparently revised the console's liquid-metal cooling solution again, with the design now more closely resembling the system used by the PlayStation 5 Pro, and the heat sink has been redesigned with different construction and materials.

Sony did not announce these changes before the consoles began hitting the market. There is currently no evidence that the revision translates into better gaming performance.

Part of a longer hardware history

Since the console launched, Sony has introduced different internal components and revised its cooling solutions, with the PlayStation 5 Slim and PlayStation 5 Pro the clearest examples. One possible explanation for the battery change is Europe's push toward more easily replaceable batteries, with a Nintendo Switch 2 console revision also changing the battery.
