Leaker: PS6 RAM and storage alone to cost over $680
Kepler_L2 said on NeoGAF that the memory and NAND components would exceed $680, without explaining how the figure was reached.
A leaker has claimed that the RAM and NAND storage in Sony's unannounced PS6 will cost more than $680 on their own. Kepler_L2 made the statement in a NeoGAF thread, according to Eurogamer.
The comment came in response to a forum user who doubted an earlier cost estimate and suggested Sony could subsidise the console down to a $680 launch price. Kepler_L2 did not explain how the $680 figure was calculated.
Sony has not confirmed any specifications or pricing for the PS6.
Earlier estimates
In June, Kepler_L2 claimed the PS6's bill of materials had climbed to close to $1,000, up from an earlier estimate of around $760. The same month, Sony Interactive Entertainment boss Hideaki Nishino told investors that, as a principle, the company does not intend to sell hardware at significant losses.
Console manufacturing is being heavily affected by an ongoing component shortage, driven by the proliferation of AI datacentres, the war in Iran and accusations of price fixing. Sony has also said it is committed to scrapping discs by 2028, the earliest the PS6 is realistically expected on the market.
