Wizards of the Coast Developers Unionize Across D&D and Magic Teams

Developers behind Dungeons & Dragons, D&D Beyond, Magic: The Gathering and Duel Masters are joining United Wizards of the Coast and asking Hasbro to recognize the union.

Developers working on Dungeons & Dragons, D&D Beyond, Magic: The Gathering and Duel Masters announced they are unionizing under United Wizards of the Coast, according to Kotaku. The workers are asking Hasbro, the parent company of Wizards of the Coast, to voluntarily recognize the union.

The group would join United Wizards of the Coast, the union established earlier this year by Magic: The Gathering Arena developers with the Communication Workers of America. Union supporters are circulating a petition urging Hasbro to recognize the unit voluntarily.

The union is seeking layoff protections, better wages, protections against AI, remote work protections, and full ownership of work created outside Wizards of the Coast offices.

If recognized, the effort would bring every Wizards of the Coast intellectual property except Magic: The Gathering Online under union representation.

Earlier organizing at Wizards of the Coast

Earlier this year, Magic: The Gathering Arena workers won their own union election. Before that vote, Wizards of the Coast leadership sent letters to those developers asking them to consider carefully whether a union was something they truly wanted.
