World of Warcraft: Forever sets franchise launch record, Blizzard says

Blizzard says the new Classic Plus experience drew the highest concurrent and returning player counts in the series' history.

Blizzard has released an official statement declaring that World of Warcraft: Forever is the biggest launch in the franchise's history, measured by concurrent players and the number of returning players. The expansion launched on November 4, and the statement was issued on November 7, according to gamerant.com.

Blizzard described the launch as smooth, saying it had adjusted for high player numbers. The company did not specify exact player counts in the statement.

Players can claim the Pouch of Violet Dust for free until November 12. The item turns a campfire's flames purple and extends campfire buffs from one to two hours.

World of Warcraft: Forever adds 1,000 new quests, new zones, a new race, new race/class combinations, new talents and new items. Before launch, it saw almost nine million characters created and long server queues.

Earlier records

The Cataclysm expansion previously held the franchise record, selling well over three million copies in its first 24 hours and reaching over 12 million active subscribers between Wrath of the Lich King and Cataclysm. The Shadowlands expansion sold almost four million copies on day one. WoW Classic drew over 1.1 million Twitch viewers and had massive service disruptions at launch. World of Warcraft: Forever was revealed as a new Classic Plus experience at BlizzCon earlier in 2026.
