A+E Execs Detail K-Pop Scripted Strategy Ahead of MIPCOM

A+E Global Media executives Patrick Vien and Youngsun Soh detailed the company's strategy of building Korean scripted shows around K-pop stars, Deadline reported ahead of MIPCOM.

That strategy has produced 14 original Korean drama series since 2017, most of them featuring K-pop talent. The Lifetime series "Oh! My Guard" stars CNBLUE's Jung Yong-hwa and Hong Seung-hee.

A+E co-produces its Korean dramas with local Korean broadcasters and partners with global streamers including Hulu and Disney+. Alongside those scripted projects, the company has produced 47 YouTube series, among them "Nego King," which is in its eighth season and has accumulated over 200 million total views.

Background

A+E launched the History and Lifetime channels in Korea in 2017 and recently rebranded from Networks to Global Media. Korean talent has been a recurring element of its slate: Astro singer Cha Eun-woo starred in "A Good Day to Be a Dog," while Got7's Park Jin-young starred in A+E's "The Witch."
