Amazon Lands Emmy Awards in Six-Year Prime Video Deal
The Primetime Emmy Awards will stream free on Prime Video under a six-year deal reported at more than $120 million.
Amazon has acquired the global streaming rights to the Primetime Emmy Awards for six years, moving the ceremony from broadcast television to Prime Video, according to comingsoon.net. Under the deal, the Emmys will be free to watch on Prime Video.
The agreement is reported to be worth over $120 million for six years, or more than $20 million per year.
Mike Hopkins, head of Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios, said the goal is to increase viewership and bring in a younger audience. Television Academy chair Cris Abrego said having a singular home for the telecast was his goal from the outset.
Early reports weeks before the announcement hinted the event could move away from traditional broadcast after more than 75 years. Before the new deal, the Emmys aired on ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC on a rotational basis for over three decades.
The 78th Emmy Awards aired last month on NBC at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles.
