Andy Weir Pitches Star Wars Stories Set During the Galactic Civil War

The Project Hail Mary author told SlashFilm he wants Star Wars to treat the Galactic Civil War as fixed canon and follow other people living through it.

Andy Weir has pitched a different approach to Star Wars: treat the Galactic Civil War as established canon and tell stories about other people living through it. The author of Project Hail Mary and The Martian made the suggestion in an interview with SlashFilm.

Weir said his biggest issue with Star Wars is that it centers on massive upheavals and new monumental wars after the good guys win. His proposal is to keep the Galactic Civil War fixed and build stories around characters outside the main conflict, in the way fiction often follows ordinary people through World War II.

He also confirmed he is a fan of Andor, the Disney+ series, and said it could only work as a television series rather than a film.

Where the franchise already goes next

Stories told from outside the Skywalker perspective are not new to the franchise. Andor, Rogue One and Star Wars Rebels follow the Rebellion and the Empire between the prequel and original trilogies.

The next film in the series, Star Wars: Starfighter, is set after The Rise of Skywalker and is due in 2027. On television, Ahsoka season 2 will largely focus on Thrawn against the New Republic, while Maul - Shadow Lord season 2 is set earlier in the Empire's reign, before the Galactic Civil War.
