The project reimagines the 1947 Western starring John Wayne. Tommy Lee Jones previously played Texas Ranger Woodrow F. Call in the 1989 television miniseries Lonesome Dove, a role that earned him an Emmy nomination. He also appeared as Samuel Jones in Ron Howard's 2003 Western thriller The Missing. In 2005, Jones directed and starred in The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada, and he directed and starred in The Homesman in 2014, led by Hilary Swank.
